VoIP is often perceived as voice over the Internet and therefore a way of making free calls. This is indeed a form of VoIP but without proper routing or sufficient bandwidth, it cannot be considered a viable business solution. By the time one has added the bandwidth and routing capability (QoS), it can no longer be termed a free service.(QoS or Quality of Service is a level of routing over a network that prioritises the voice traffic to minimise latency and packet loss).
VoIP can be split into two fundamental domains; IP Trunking and IP Telephony.
IP Trunking is the simple carriage of voice calls between two points. This may be accomplished using a variety of mediums from good old fashioned copper wires underground to wireless services via satellite. There is no intelligence or value added services. The quality of this IP Trunking depends upon the bandwidth available and the codec being used. The Redeye Telecom VoIP network supports all codecs.
IP Telephony is the end-user device and the functionality of a traditional telephone service delivered using VoIP. For more details on our IP Telephony, see SIP Telephony on the menu. |
